Ulster Jersey Cattle Club
2008 Annual Herds Competition
The Ulster Jersey Cattle Club’s annual Herds Competition took place on
Tuesday and Wednesday the 23rd and 24th September. Judging was in the capable
hands of the Jersey Cattle Society Chairman, Peter Prior of Designer Jerseys
in Essex.
Visiting herds form Kilrea in the North to Seaforde in the
South and from Bangor in the East to Enniskillen in the West
Peter had the chance to see much of Northern Ireland and was
fortunate to enjoy the only good weather we have seen for months.
At a dinner in the Chestnut Lodge, Moira on the final evening
Mr Prior thanked the UJCC for the opportunity of judging the
competition. He complimented the breeders on the quality of
their herds being particularly impressed by the numbers of
high yielding and older animals he had seen.
Before announcing the results he congratulated the Fleming
Family whose Potterswalls herd have retained the National Herds
Inspection Championship for the third successive time. The
National Competition results had been announced the previous
week at the Dairy Farming Event at Stoneleigh.
It was therefore no surprise that the Potterswalls Herd featured
strongly in the Northern Ireland results.
