Ulster Jersey Cattle Club
2009 AGM
Jersey Club celebrate a successful year
The Ulster Jersey Cattle Club held its Annual General meeting
in the Chestnut Lodge, Moira. Chairman William McCaughern
welcomed the members and friends who had come along to participate
in the AGM and to hear Guest Speaker Richard Saxby from the
Saxown Jersey Herd in Yorkshire.
The Chairman reported on another
successful year for the breed congratulating the members on
their achievements through out the year. The quality of the
cattle which make up the Fleming Family’s Potterswalls
herd saw them winning many Championships throughout the year
and also retaining the title of best Jersey herd on conformation
in the UK for the third successive time. Marcus Grey’s
Fermanagh based Killadeas herd led the way on production with
a top individual yield just short of 1000kgs combined fat and
protein. Congratulations were also expressed to Lindsay and
Lyndon Fleming on their success in the handling classes at
the All Britain Calf Show.

A very interesting talk by
Richard Saxby rounded off the evening. Club members enjoyed
hearing Richard’s progress from
milking cows at weekends to spells with the noted Osberton
and Ravenfield herds. All this time he was building up a small
herd of his own which were milked in partnership with his employers.
Today he is farming a tenanted farm in the Yorkshire Dales although he is the
first to admit that in the current economic climate times are tough! As a sales
rep for Jisex he also gave us an insight into some of the bulls he has used in
the past and those available today. His impressions of the North American Jersey,
the Louisville Jersey Show and Toronto Winter Fair also proved interesting.
