Calf Show 2011

The Fleming Family from Seaforde dominated the prize list in the Jersey section at the 9th annual multi-breed calf show, held at the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira.

Brothers Lindsay and Lyndon Fleming claimed the champion and reserve showmanship awards, while the family’s senior calf walked off with the supreme overall championship ribbons.

Ailsa Fleming won the junior showmanship class, while her cousin, Amber Sloan, secured first prize in the novice showmanship class.

Jersey judge, Louise Graham, from Moira, praised the Fleming boys for their handling skills. “They are both very capable and always in control of their calves. The overall winner had a slight advantage over the reserve.”

In the calf section the supreme championship ribbons went to the January 2010 born Potterswalls Minister Poppy. She was sired by Select-Scott Minister, and her dam is the home-bred Potterswalls Jazzman Poppy.

“The overall champion is a well balanced calf which was very stylish on parade. She is powerful and has great openness of rib,” explained Louise Graham, who runs the 3-cow Brookvale Jersey herd, and 40-cow Moyrah Holstein herd in partnership with her husband Richard.

The reserve championship award went to Clandeboye Estates, Bangor, for the October 2010 born Clandeboye Action Mabel. This Forest Glen Avery Action daughter is bred from Clandeboye Remake Mabel. “The runner-up is another very nice calf.”

Ulster Jersey Cattle Club chairman, Daniel Brady, thanked Louise Graham for giving up her time to place the entries at the annual calf show. “Thanks also to our valued sponsors, United Feeds who sponsored the calf section; and Ulster Bank who sponsored the showmanship section.”
