JERSEY HEIFERS IN DEMAND AT TAUNTON
MARKET
Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt held a
special sale of Channel Island Cattle following the weekly
dairy sale at Taunton Market on Saturday 8th July 2006.
The
sale comprised of a Dispersal from Newhouse Farm (Twineham)
Ltd Sussex, plus consignments of 13 freshly calved Jersey
Cows and Heifers from Chris Salisbury, 4 Pedigree Incalf
Heifers from R & J Mann’s “Wotton” Herd
and 31 Channel Island and cross Brown Swiss from Messrs KE & SJ
Mew from the Isle of Wight.
There was no doubt that the Jersey breed was much in demand. The
sale topped at 1500gns for the well bred incalf heifer “Wotton
Sambos Senorita” by the Lester Sambo bull she had a PIN
of +£42 and PLI +£44 and was due to the Jersey
in September. She was one of 40 that travelled to Pembrokeshire
having been bought by the Morgan family. The consignment
of four averaged £1407. Chris Salisbury’s
calved cows and heifers sold to 1380gns for “Hollesley
Solar Dinger” a July calved heifer. The three cows
averaged £703.50 and ten calved heifers £1208.55.
From Keith Mews consignment of 31 non recorded Cows and Heifers
it was again the Jersey Heifers that topped the entry reaching
1280gns twice for June calvers. All those forward averaged £845.
From the herd dispersal of Newhouse Farm (Twineham) Ltd the
Jersey’s again topped the entry with 1060gns paid for
a November third calver by Danish Bookmark that had been served
in May to the Simmental and 1080gns for their only Jersey Incalf
Heifer by the Dutch Hollow Berrettas Option bull and due in
July. The 18 Jersey and Jersey x Cows and Heifers averaged £717
compared with 46 Holstein cows that averaged £710
