Ellerdine Jersey Dispersal draws in the crowds and
tops at 2700gns
18th July 2007
After a lifetime of milking cows, David Harris of Cottage
Farm, Ellerdine, Shropshire decided to disperse his highly
respected Ellerdine Herd of pedigree Jerseys which was established
by his father in 1950 with the purchase of three heifers from
the Plasdixon Herd. The Ellerdine Herd has been to the fore
of the breed for many years and has bred many great individuals
including the reigning Royal Show Champion, Ellerdine Lester
Amberlight 2nd (Ex93-2E) who won the accolade for their owners
Smiddiehill Jerseys. The Ellerdien herd has been commercially
managed, achieving an average of 5963 kg milk at 5.69% butterfat
and 3.87% protein.
A large crowd were present travelling from all corners of
the country and the cattle were distributed far and wide with
cattle going from Scotland in the north to Devon and Somerset
in the South West, Essex in the South East and to South Wales.
The top price was achieved for Ellerdine Midnight Crystal,
a beautiful young dry cow sired by Giprat B Midnight Thunder,
bred from three generations of VG/Ex dams Crystal is due again
in early September to Family Hill Avery Signature. She was
purchased in a three way split between specialist cattle fitters
Cameron Baty and Steve McLaughlan and Liz Tomlinson of Bilsborrow,
Preston.
Making the long trip to Devon was the second top seller Ellerdine
Blazes Amberlight 2nd (GP83-2yr), a daughter of Valleystream
Berettas Blaze; Amberlight 2nd is another young dry cow due
with her second calf. She has two VG dams with first dam being
a full sister to this year’s Royal Show Champion and
now joins Mark Davies’ herd at Tiverton. Mark also purchased
another Thunder daughter for 1350 gns.
The third highest price was another member of the Amberlight
family; Ellerdine Lords Amberlight 2nd (VG88), a daughter of
Ellerdine Lord and a maternal sister to the Royal Show Champion.
She calved her third calf in January, was bred to Giprat Belles
Connection and was purchased by Mrs Judith Waring of Beverley,
East Yorkshire. This cow’s heifer calf by Connection
was the top priced calf selling at 920 gns to Huw Evans of
Carmarthen.
Two cows made 1450 gns each; the first was the (Ex90) Ellerdine
Jasons Posy 4th who is milking with her third calf, is a daughter
of Ellerdine Posys Jason and sold to Anne Marie Myatt of Whitegrove
Farms of Blithbury, Staffordshire. The other was another Jason
daughter, Ellerdine Jasons Idris (VG85-2yr) who was milking
with her second calf and sold to Richard Saxby of Coniston
Cold, Nr.Skipton.
In-calf heifers sold to 1120 gns for Ellerdine Jasons Rosalie
2nd whose dam and g.dam were both scored GM MM (VG). She is
due at the end of the year to Signature and was purchased by
Graham and Marion Wallace of Goostrey, Cheshire for their Grahmar
herd. The top price maiden heifer was Ellerdine Easton Amberlight
bred from three VG dams; this 12 month old heifer by Just A
Few Jude Easton sold to T A G Evans of Welshpool, Powys for
