Hardinge Dispersal Sale

1st October 2009

The dispersal of Tim Floyd’s Hardinge herd of Jerseys at Upper Seagry, Chippenham, Wiltshire, brought on to the market one of the most highly productive herds of the breed to be sold in recent years.

This old established herd, with a history of more than 60 years, averaged well over 7,000kg at 5% butterfat, and attracted buyers from as far afield as Cumbria, Mid and West Wales, Devon, Derbyshire and Staffordshire.

Thomas Evans was the sale’s leading buyer, securing 21 head or nearly a quarter of the cattle in the sale for his Trawscoed herd at Welshpool, Powys. He made the day’s top bid of 2,900gs for Hardinge Mannix Justina, a fresh third calver that yielded over 8,000 kg at 5.6% in her second lactation. Her two week old heifer calf by Forest Glen Lemvig Gunner made 700gs to Huw Evans and family, Carmarthen for their Nicel herd. Among the other cattle heading to Trawscoed are a freshly calved heifer by the Danish sire Q Impuls at 2,300gs, a high yielding fifth calver at 2,200gs and a freshly calved young cow and heifer at 2,000gs apiece.

The Arley Farming Co paid 2,200gs for the outstanding brood cow Hardinge Fabulous Daphine, a daughter of Molly Brook Berretta Fabulous, due with her sixth calf in January. She joins the Imperial herd based at Shatterford, Bewdley, Worcs. The Royal Farms gave 1,900gs for a freshly calved heifer by O.F Barber Rocket to add to the famous Windsor herd in Berkshire.

A keen contender for the better cattle was Ted Fearon, looking for quality Jerseys to join his Holstein milkers in the Waltall herd at Cartmel, Cumbria and he purchased the top priced in calf heifer at 1,550gs. Maiden heifers made up to 1,000gs for a Iatola daughter purchased by Thomas Evans.
