Dispersal Sale of the Abbotsley Herd of Pedigree Jerseys

Abbotsley Jerseys Disperse to 2150Gns. at Beeston

The Dispersal of the entire Abbotsley Herd of Jerseys attracted buyers from all over the UK and the Republic of Ireland when it was sold at Beeston Castle Auction on Friday, 3rd October 2014.

The sale was due to the impending retirement of Roy and Christine Bailey of White House Farm, Draycott-in-the Clay, Nr. Sudbury, Derbyshire who have been great supporters of the breed all their working lives. Breeders and commercial milk producers ttraveled from all over and the cattle were sold to buyers from as far away as Pedrthshire in the North to Devon in the South and also to County Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland.

The top seller was the second calf cow Bluestone Midnight Louise (VG85-2yr), a daughter of Potterswalls Glams Comerica who had given 5642 kg. at 6.07% 3.92% as a heifer and was sold giving 29.4 kg with her second having calved at the end of July. She was one of 22 head purchased by Keith Donovan of Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary, Eire. Among Mr. Donovan’s other purchases were the milking heifer Troughbrook Mr. DJ Festoon (GP83-2yr) at 1550 gns., the fresh second calf Coldeaton Ringmasters Daisybelle at 1380gns and Abbotsley Master Bella (GP82-2yr) another fresh second calver also at 1380 gns.

The second highest price went to Mosc Brenda (VG86-2yr), another fresh second calver who gave over 8000 kg. as a heifer. She was one of 25 cattle purchased by D & P Evans of Chulmleigh, Devon. Her 19 day old heifer calf by Windsor Commanders Encore was the leading priced heifer calf selling at 650 gns to William Edwards of Aberystwyth.

Other leading prices in the milking portion included Bluestone Belles Midge (VG88-3yr), a second calf daughter of Giprat Belles Chairman selling at 1550 gns and the Island bred Prides Verify Dianthus (VG86-2yr) who is due with her 3rd in December and realised 1400 gns to John Lomax of Chorlton, Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Served heifers sold up to 1050 gns for a daughter of Gloaming SS Forever due in January and maiden heifers were up to 750 gns for an 11 month old daughter of Prides LS Aldo.

Leading volume buyers of the day were S & V Gray of Claish Farms, Callander, Perthshire who purchased 30 head.

107 Cows and Milking Heifers £1024.18 (including 22 Heifer Calves at £294.00);
8 In-calf and Served Heifers £809.81;
17 Maiden Heifers £518.82.
