Jersey Breed Commentary 2011
The Jersey breed is seeing an
enormous surge in popularity across the world as
its low environmental impact, efficiency in converting feeds
in to milk
components and ease of management are all recognised as economically
beneficial to farmers.
In the UK herd numbers remain constant
as demand for Jerseys continues to
increase, especially in areas supplying cheese-makers.
This
trend has a strong story to see it continue as recent research
from the
USA shows that Jerseys consume 32% less water and produce 20%
less carbon
for every tonne of cheese made – and this is before the
manufacturers benefit from
transporting and processing lower solids milk.
Our recent price
increases on milk constituents favours Jersey production
further.
During the past year UK Jerseys have had a raft
of enquiries from overseas for
semen, embryos and live animals. Semen has been sold to Brazil
embryos to
Argentina and live animals to Dubai.
The marketing agreement
with Cogent Breeding comes with huge
expectations for UK Jersey genetics to access world markets
as young sires
graduate through the Visions programme.
The Jersey breed in
the UK is committed to participating in research on dairy.
