Government Announcement on Responsibility and Cost
Sharing
I am writing to you about the latest development in
Responsibility and Cost Sharing for Animal Health and
Welfare as you represent an organisation that may be
interested in this policy or because you have previously
responded to a consultation on this issue.
On the 26 April, the Agriculture and Food Minister Jim
Paice announced that the government is setting up a new
Animal Health and Welfare Board for England. This is
an important step in sharing responsibility for animal
health and welfare with animal keepers and other interested
parties. The aim is to build trust between government
and animal keepers and strengthen arrangements for working
together. The Board will be the principal source of advice
to Defra Ministers on strategic health and welfare matters
relating to kept animals in England.
The proposals for the Board follow careful consideration
of the recommendations of the Responsibility and Cost
Sharing Advisory Group who published their report in
December 2010; and of views expressed about the report
since its publication.
The Chair and other external Board members for the new
Board are to be recruited through an open and transparent
appointment process. The deadline for applications is
24th May. The Board will meet for the first time in the
second half of 2011.
Could you please bring this announcement, and the information
about the appointment opportunities and process, to the
attention of all those you think may be interested (including,
where appropriate, members of your organisation).
Regards
Julie Wootton
