Sexed makes sense

The demand for Jersey cattle showing no signs of abating – just look at the list of new members we welcome to the Society. And farmhouse cheesemakers, in particular, have cottoned-on to the benefits they gain from including 25 – 30 per cent Jersey milk in their production.

Conception rates from sexed semen have hit 70 per cent on maiden heifers in one South-eastern Jersey herd.

All round the reports indicate that sexed achieves results close to conventional AI in maiden and once-calved heifers.

As more farmers house heifers until after first cut silage-making, the AI season can be extended without excessive work.

At £35 – 48 per straw, 90 per cent heifer births will look a cheap price to pay compared with freshly-calved heifers at £1350 at auction.

Jersey Sires – packing protein

With the increasing emphasis being placed on milk protein by milk processors, it is pleasing to note that the Society’s ‘Jersey Sires’ is well to the fore in the Top 20 available Jerseys, for both weight of protein and protein percentage production.
